Push notifications on Android

· Android 1.8.1-donthave.4

The Android app can now notify you about new messages and mentions while it's closed. It does this without Google: notifications come through UnifiedPush, using a small push app you install alongside Stoat.

Getting set up

  1. Install a push app. Either of these works:
    • Sunup (F-Droid): the easiest. Install it and open it once; there's nothing to configure.
    • ntfy (F-Droid or Google Play): uses our own push server. In ntfy's settings, set the default server to https://push.stoat.donthave.fun before turning on notifications in Stoat.
  2. Turn notifications on. In Stoat, go to Settings → Notifications and turn on push notifications. If you'd already turned them on, turn them off and on again.
  3. Pick your push app if Stoat asks. It only asks when you have more than one installed. You can change it later under Settings → Notifications → Push app.

If you don't have a push app installed, Stoat tells you so when you try to turn notifications on.
